After failing to become a contestant for TV5’s “Who Wants to be a
Millionaire” Eduardo Gaeilo Pajinag, Jr. tried and tried until he was
finally accepted on his eight audition.
The persistence of the 24-year-old alumnus of the University of Santo Tomas paid off handsomely Sunday night as he became only the third big winner of the P2-million cash jackpot in the history of the show’s Philippine franchise.
Starting his appearance from the previous Sunday’s episode, Gaeilo —
currently a senior associate for Information Technology Risk and
Assurance at SGV & Co — has steadily climbed to the top of the money
tree using the High Risk Money Tree.
In the course of his ascension, however, he ended up using all of his four lifelines. He used “Ask the People” in one of the early questions. By the time he successfully answered the P600,000 level by the end of the show, he had also used up all his three remaining lifelines: “Switch”, “50-50” and “Double Dip”.
Pushing his luck even further, Gaeilo bravely took on the P1 million question: “Kung ang ibig sabihin ng Trinoma ay Triangle North of Manila, ano naman ang Tribeca sa America?” and correctly chose the correct answer which is “Triangle Below Canal”.
Already P1 million richer, Gaeilo still wouldn’t quit even as host Vic Sotto dangled the P1 million check in his face, a check Bossing regretfully ended up tearing.
Turned out Gaeilo had made the right decision as he was very certain about his answer to the final question, “Ano ang pamagat ng poem ni Lewis Carroll na ginamitan ng nonsense words?”
In correctly answering “Jabberwocky”, Gaeilo confessed to Bossing that he remembers the world-famous all-male hip-hop dance group, the Jabbawockeez, as having admitted in an interview that they took their name from a Lewis Carroll poem.

In winning the P2 million, Gaeilo also became this season’s first big
winner and the second non-celebrity overall after another IT
professional, Karl Jonathan Aguilar, won it in 2011.
Megastar Sharon Cuneta became the first P2 million winner of the show when she appeared as a celebrity contestant. Ate Shawie actually won P1 million in 2001 when the local franchise was still owned by Viva Television and aired on IBC 13.
De La Salle University professor Amelita Lopez-Forbes, who won P1 million in 2001, became the very first millionaire of the British game show franchise’s Philippine edition back when it was still hosted by actor Christopher De Leon.
Now with Vic Sotto handling the hosting chores, “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” is now on its 10th season on TV5 and airs every Sunday at 7PM.
