At "The Janitor's" press conference yesterday, October 1, the cast,
along with director Mike Tuviera, answered some questions about the
well-acclaimed Cinemalaya indie action film.
Among the questions was how Direk Mike felt about the movie’s second release falling on such a time of rampant police controversy.
“In one of the screenings [may] tinanong sa’kin, did I write the movie or did I make the movie in response daw dun sa mga headlines sa mga nangyayari ngayon,” shared the director. “Sabi ko, ang malungkot nga eh ‘pag napanood mo ‘yung pelikula ko, if you think that it is violent, if you think that it is depressing or whatever, tingnan niyo lang ‘yung balita, tingnan niyo lang ‘yung news or ‘yung headlines. Mas grabe ‘yung nangyayari sa labas.”
The Cinemalaya film revolves around the story of a former police officer who is ordered to target a group responsible for a heinous bank robbery that involved the murder of all ten of the bank’s employees.
Based on an actual bank heist in Laguna some years ago, the movie taps into the complicated world of crime and justice.
Being an independent film, its production relied on a low budget and a limited schedule (according to Direk Mike, they filmed all the scenes in a span of only eight days).
So what was their secret in creating such a successful movie?
“Patience,” said Direk Mike. “And sasabihin ko na po,” he added. “Ang pinaka-sikreto is you get the right actors.”
Mr. Mike Tuviera seems to have found the secret to success because at the Cinemalaya awards night last month, “The Janitor” took home the awards for Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Screenplay, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, and Best Director, making it the most awarded film of the season.
Initially screened as an entry to this year’s Cinemalaya, the film is making a comeback to the big screen this October 8 through a distribution deal by Star Cinema.
Among the cast members present at the A-grade movie’s press conference were Richard Gomez, Dennis Trillo, LJ Reyes, Nicco Manalo, and Alex Medina.
