With the elimination of Japan’s Marie Nakagawa, only three
contestants are in contention for next week’s big finale in “Asia’s Next
Top Model Cycle 2”.
And two of them happen to be Filipinas Katarina Rodriguez and Jodilly Pendre who will vie for the top prize of the popular reality competition series along with Malaysia’s Sheena Liam.
Based on their performances on the 12 episodes of the series that aired on Star World (TV5 also airs the show on a slightly delayed basis), Jodilly and Katarina are the odds-on favorites to win the title of Asia’s Next Top Model.
A 20-year-old model and former national volleyball player from Mandaluyong, Jodilly had the first call out or best photo on two episodes and placed second on five more—making her the darling of judges Joey Mead-King, Adam Williams, Mike Rosenthal and host Nadya Hutagalung.
Jodilly has also been a challenge winner and was described as “honest and classy” by guest judge Subaru general manager Glenn Tan, in Episode 6. But she has also landed in the bottom three once in Episode 8 where her photo taken in a spa village was criticized for “the disconnect between her face and body”.
In that same episode, Katarina got kudos for the first time in the series for finally improving in a photo taken on a yacht.
Despite possessing what is arguably the prettiest face in the competition, Katarina struggled in the early goings and got her first call out in Episode 9 when the remaining contestants showed their wares on the jungles of Sarawak, Borneo.
She then followed it up with a runner-up finish to Jodilly with another stunning photo taken in Gaya Island.
Katarina suffered a setback when she landed but survived the bottom 2 during Episode 11 that was not aired because it involved a photo shoot with Malaysian Airlines. Out of sensitivity to the ill-fated Flight MH370, only a recap of what happened in that episode was posted on the show’s YouTube channel.
Goddaughter of Filipina supermodel and style icon Tweetie de Leon-Gonzalez, the 21-year-old mestiza Fil-Am who was born and raised in Orlando, Florida bounced back the following week where she beat Jodilly for best photo and won her second first call-out overall.
Although she has only won a first call out only once in the series, Malaysia’s Sheena Liam has been the show’s most consistent performer, having landed in the top three in 9 out of 12 episodes.
The 22-year-old blonde-haired native of Selangor landed in the bottom 2 only once and was preferred by the judges over Marie who won best photo in three episodes.
With the series being shot entirely in Malaysia, Sheena also has the added advantage of having the hometown crowd cheering for her. Also, if the votes of the judges between the two Filipina models would be divided, then she would end up winning the contest as a result.
One thing is certain, either Jodilly or Katarina is at least assured of repeating Stephanie Retuya’s runner-up finish last year. Of course, both of them would rather win it all and make history as the first Filipina to be dubbed as Asia’s Next Top Model.
“Asia’s Next Top Model” airs on TV5 every Thursday at 9PM.
