TV5 Primetime Princess "Jasmine Curtis-Smith" Admits being in Love a Factor in ‘Replacement Bride’ Performance.

Given the warm reception of the first two Studio 5 Presents offerings, “The Lady Next Door” and “When I Fall in Love”, Jasmine Curtis-Smith admits to feeling some pressure and wondered how “The Replacement Bride”, her own made-for-TV movie with Daniel Matsunaga, would fare.

“Because this is the first time that TV5 is doing this series of made-for-TV movies, we all wondered how fans would receive this. After the first two movies starring Ms. Alice (Dixson) and Ms. Nora (Aunor) did well, I was like, ‘May manonood ba?’ But I hope so since both my fans and Daniel’s fans have been very supportive of us,” she told InterAksyon and other entertainment media during a recent special screening.

Compared to “The Lady Next Door” and “When I Fall in Love” which are both romantic dramas, Jasmine said “The Replacement Bride” is a light, romantic comedy project that she had a blast working on.

“It’s absolutely adorable. Sobrang cute niya. Natuwa ako kasi pati mga adlib namin na hindi naman kasama sa script, napasama sa movie,” the 19-year-old actress enthused.

“Masaya siyang gawin, hindi ka mapapagod sa mga iyakan scenes, although meron din namang ilang moving scenes but the focus is more on the comedic love story.”

In the film that seems to be partly inspired by rom-com classics like “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “Runaway Bride”, Jasmine plays Chynna, a headstrong young woman who is secretly in love with Kael, her best friend since childhood. But Kael, played by Daniel, is about to get married to someone else.
When the bride, Sandy (Arci Muñoz), became a no-show on the day of the wedding partly because of Chynna, she must now make things right and help her best friend win Sandy back.

“The Replacement Bride” was directed by Mac Alejandre — who previously worked with Jasmine in her first TV5 mini-series “Nandito Ako” and was also Daniel’s first ever TV director in GMA’s fantaserye “The Last Prince”.

Direk Mac said that although rom-coms are “creatively challenging” in the sense that they have been done millions of times, the execution is what keeps them new and fresh.

“In my case, I always go back to what is basic and what is basic is what is real and true, what the heart dictates,” he said.

Direk Mac noted that while both Jasmine and even Daniel, notwithstanding his limited command of Tagalog, have grown by leaps and bounds since the last time he has worked with either of them, it is their chemistry that makes “The Replacement Bride” work and contributes to plenty of “kilig” moments in the film.

After “The Replacement Bride”, Jasmine will then be next seen on her own series, “Jasmine” which she says is “a fictional TV show about an actress making a TV show”.

“In that show, my character is about to be launched in a teleserye called “URLoved” when she encounters a stalker called Maskara,” she added.

Jasmine said that they already wrapped up two taping days for the series and admits that she does feel a little strange playing a fictionalized version of herself.

“We have guests like Eula Caballero and Mark Neumann who play themselves on the series. One scene that felt particularly weird for me was when my character was interviewed by MJ Marfori who also plays herself and then after the take, MJ interviewed me for real. Parang wala namang pinagkaiba,” she confessed.
“Jasmine” premieres on TV5 on March 4.
