Nadine Samonte admits it’s not easy playing a role that has very little in common with the real her.
“Pag malayo sa totoong personality ko, parang mahirap talagang i-arte,” she recently told InterAksyon in reference to her character, Jana Halliwell, in the upcoming TV5 sitcom “One of the Boys”.
As the “kontrabida” in the series, Jana plays the girlfriend of one of the members of Juan Direction who later develops a crush on lady cab driver Gabriella “Gabi” Silang, played by Eula Caballero. Jealous and enraged, Jana is supposed to make life difficult for Gabi with one scheme after another.
Still, the 23-year-old actress accepted the role for two reasons. “First of all, gusto ko yung challenge. Kinukuha ko yung roles na hindi ko pa nagagawa kasi nga I love the challenge,” Nadine confessed.
Although this is actually the first time that she’ll be doing a sitcom in her 11-year career, Nadine does not expect to have a difficult time. If anything, the presence of master comedian Joey De Leon as well as Empoy, who is best known for his title role in “Kapitan Awesome”, should result in plenty of light moments for the whole cast.
“Magiging masaya itong set namin. I expect to have a lot of fun working on this series,” she quipped.
Being open to challenges has handsomely paid off for Nadine and allowed her to deliver memorable portrayals in her projects with TV5 such as the dual roles of Bella and Cristina in “Rod Santiago’s The Sisters”, Mayor Andrea Deogracias in “Sa Ngalan ng Ina”, Maila Braganza in “Valiente” and, most recently, Lara Martinez in “Kidlat”.
On film, she has likewise received kudos for her performance as Jake Cuenca’s long-suffering wife in the Cinemalaya indie “Nuwebe”. The globetrotting incest drama continues to travel around the world as it is scheduled to compete in the Jozi Film Festival in Johannesburg (February 21 to 23); Queens World Film Festival in Queens, New York (March 4 to 9); the Rome Independent Film Festival (March 16 to 23): CinemAsia Film Festival in Amsterdam (April 1 to 6); and the Festival Cinematográfico Internacional del Uruguay in Montevideo (April 10 to 20).
“I really enjoyed doing that indie film. Iba yung atake, iba yung pagkakagawa. Sana magkaroon ako ulit ng chance na mabigyan ng isa pang indie project this year,” Nadine mused.
The other reason why she accepted “One of the Boys” has something to do with the one thing she has in common with her character, Jana.
“Mahilig siyang mangarera dito eh yun din ang hilig ko. I love cars, I love driving and not just driving but manual driving. I do a lot of karting so doon ako na-excite when I was offered this project. Sana nga, gawing totoo na makapag-karera ako sa show na ito,” she admitted.
Although Nadine won’t categorically consider herself as “one of the boys”, she revealed that she does like to do a lot of “boy stuff”. In addition to karting, she admits that she’s a regular fixture at firing ranges.
Now, she even sports a boyish bobcat hairstyle, which she insists has nothing to do with her preparation for her new sitcom.
“Wala lang. Gusto ko lang magpaigsi. New year, new hairstyle,” she quipped.
Directed by Robert Quebral and also starring Joey De Leon, Empoy Marquez, Benjo Leoncio and BJ “Tolits” Forbes, “One of the Boys” airs on TV5 this summer starting March 4.
