American political satirist
and comedian Stephen Colbert has joined the global call for aid to
victims of typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in the Philippines while lampooning
China’s meager contribution at the same time.
In Thursday’s episode of his satirical news show “The Colbert Report”, Colbert praised the United States government’s massive relief efforts and pilloried the Asian superpower’s paltry $100,000 donation.
“Wow! Apparently the Chinese symbol for crisis is also the one for ‘bite me!’,” he quipped.
Colbert then challenged his viewers, whom he referred to as “Colbert Nation”, to shame China further by donating more. He asked them to text $10 donations to the nonprofit organization Convoy of Hope’s typhoon response efforts.
“Let’s kick China’s ass at being compassionate because we are a brotherhood of men!” Colbert enthused. Then he pointed to a map of China and hissed, “You stingy jerks!”
