Certain celebrities are not only busy leading fundraising events and tweeting their support for CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, they are also spearheading online petitions to help the victims of typhoon Yolanda.
TV hosts Bianca Gonzalez and Luis Manzano, the family of celebrity couple Cheska Garcia-Kramer and Doug Kramer, and talent manager Pia Magalona have all taken to petition platform Change.org to enjoin private corporations to provide much-needed services in disaster-stricken areas in the Visayas.
Gonzalez and Manzano have called on the country’s two major telcos, Globe and Smart, to provide hotlines for the Philippine National Police and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
“We Globe and Smart for offering free text service to victims of Typhoon Yolanda. We would like to ask them to pour resources to expand the PNP’s peace and order hotline and use their networks to allow the government to FEED ACCURATE INFORMATION AND CORRECT FALSE REPORTS,” their petition said.
They also asked Smart and Globe to send personnel to help man those hotlines for the PNP, which, they said, currently has only one hotline in Tacloban City, and to “likewise to allow the DSWD to disseminate information on the delivery and mechanisms of relief services.”
In their petition, Team Kramer and Magalona asked the Makati Medical Center and The Medical City, respectively, to set up mobile hospitals in the Visayas.
“A mobile hospital in each province can help thousands of survivors who are in need of emergency care or surgery. Instead of patients being airlifted to Manila, why not just bring the hospitals to them?” they said in their petitions.
As of this writing, Team Kramer’s petition has 14,634 signatories, Magalona’s has 6,864, while Gonzalez and Manzano’s has 1,391.
