Kapatid Star Alwyn Uytingco Headlines TV5’s Upcoming Gay Comedy Series ‘Beki Boxer’

“Eto, Beki.”
That was Alwyn Uytingco’s reply when Interaksyon recently asked him how he was doing these days. No, that was not an earthshaking declaration that he was coming out. Far from it.
Alwyn was actually referring to his new series for TV5, “Beki Boxer”, where he will play the title role of a gay boxer named Rocky.

Helmed by noted TV and indie director Jade Castro, the upcoming weekly show set to air this summer also stars Vin Abrenica, Danita Paner, Christian Vasquez, John Regala, Joross Gamboa, Onyok Velasco and Claire Hartell.

Asked how he reacted when the role was first offered to him, the 25-year-old actor said he has no qualms about playing a gay character.

“Feeling ko kahit kaninong actor i-offer ang project na ito, tatanggapin. Para sa akin, sobrang ganda ng concept,” he said during the recent story conference for “Beki Boxer”.
Admitting that this is his most challenging role to date, Alwyn added that it is also the most physically demanding.

“I’m a fan of mixed martial arts and Manny Pacquiao. Pero ang training namin dito for ‘Beki Boxer’, ngayon ko lang na-experience, although nag-Muay Thai naman ako dati for ‘Cassandra: Warrior Angel’ last year,” he pointed out.

In a recent interview with News5, Alwyn expressed the desire of everyone in the show to push the fight scenes in particular to “professional boxing level”.

Among the few spoilers that the cast and crew were willing to share for the meantime was that Alwyn’s character would be involved in a different kind of love triangle with Vin Abrenica and Danita Paner. He and Danita would be the rivals for Vin’s affection.

Asked if a kissing scene with Vin is in the horizon for their characters, Alwyn just smiled and said, “Abangan niyo na lang yung flow ng story kasi nakakatuwa. Ewan ko lang kung kikiligin kayo pero para sa akin, nakakatuwa.”

Another hilarious angle involves the character of Claire Hartell, who plays Rocky’s childhood friend, who is now in love with him and wants him to turn into a real man.

With regards to the likelihood of “Beki Boxer” being compared to GMA’s hit teleserye, “My Husband’s Lover,” Alwyn said the comparison is unavoidable but added that their series has a lot more different things to offer.

“Feeling ko, mako-connect lang siya because of the gender issue. Pero the whole concept is very different in the sense that it also involves a sport. Hindi naman siya nakaka-pressure for me kasi ibang platform yung pupuntahan ng show,” he noted.

Since signing up with TV5 in 2011, Alwyn has had many memorable moments in such projects like “Babaeng Hampaslupa”, “Nandito Ako”, “Sa Ngalan ng Ina” and “Cassandra: Warrior Angel”.
His comedic talent has also been brought to the fore with his stint in the Kapatid Network’s re-imagining of “Iskul Bukol” in 2011 as well as in “Kapitan Awesome”, “Lokomoko U” and its successor, “Tropa Mo Ko Unli”, where he is currently a mainstay.

Still, he hopes to be back on the big screen after last appearing in “Enteng ng Ina Mo” in 2011. He is particularly keen on doing at least one independent film for this year.

“Sana makagawa ako ulit ng indie film this year. Kung magkaroon ng opening ulit sa Cinemalaya, I’m willing to audition,” he declared.
