‘American Idol’ Still Enjoying Good Ratings in Philippins, Thanks to Chemistry of New Set of Judges.

Even as it now has to deal with strong competition from similar shows such as “The Voice” and “The X-Factor”, “American Idol” remains popular with audiences worldwide.

Here in the Philippines, the reality search series remains a ratings magnet even on its 13th season and despite several changes in the composition of its panel of judges. In its January 16 season premiere that aired live over Star World, the show scored 0.65 in the category of females aged 16-34, with a tremendous 1.3 in its sub-target of females 16-24.

What these numbers essentially means is that this season’s opening show of “American Idol” not only exceeded the rating of last season’s premiere but also registered as Star World’s highest launch numbers for the iconic competition.

Demographics wise, the ratings indicate that Star World has not only succeeded in reaching the channel’s target market of young adult females with the new season’s maiden telecast but they also showed how the channel is reaching a far wider demographic.

In the category of male and female viewers aged 16-49, Star World rated 0.21, improving on the channel’s score for last year’s premiere. Meanwhile, in the C/S2+ category, Star World achieved a 0.26 rating, rising 0.06 from its 0.2 rating last year.

As confirmed by Fox International Channels VP and Philippines territory head Jude Turcuato, the numbers are even higher than that of the other network that also airs the show.

One big reason why the series continues to do so well is this year’s panel of judges which featured two returnees in country superstar Keith Urban and dance diva Jennifer Lopez (who sat out Season 12 last year) and one “newcomer” in smooth talking singer-songwriter Harry Connick, Jr. who has become the darling of the show.

Connick has been praised for being “critically honest with them (contestants) while still having compassion for their hopes and dreams”, as writer Annaka Turner posted on AmericanIdol.Net, a newssite for the show.
“Bringing Harry on board was a brilliant move by the producers… Without him, Jennifer and Keith might fall flat and come out kind of boring and wishy-washy. With Harry, it creates a whole different and delightful dynamic. We can’t wait to see what is going to happen with the three of them each week going forward,” Turner added.

Probably the most experienced judge in the new panel, Jlo compares the good time she’s enjoying with Urban and Connick with the two other popular judges that she worked with in previous seasons.

“With Steven (Tyler) and Randy (Jackson) was one thing…I loved coming to work every day. This season is no different. I sit between two people who I respect and have a good time with. We all love music. That’s what is going to make it spark fresh and new again,” she recently shared after the new panel of judges were introduced by Fox to the media at the 2014 Winter TCA Press Tour in California.

For his part, Keith Urban is raving about “the great chemistry” that new panel have on an interview in “Jimmy Kimmel Live” prior to the premiere of the new season. “You guys will see it, I’m telling ya!” he promised back then.

Many are seeing it now. After seven audition sessions in Boston, Austin, San Francisco, Detroit, Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Omaha, the trio has given 212 golden tickets to Hollywood.

One of those lucky ticket holders is 16-year old Filipino-American Malaya Watson who aced the Detroit auditions with her rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way”
