Actress Eugene Domingo has joined director Jun Robles Lana in Tokyo
for the world premiere of their film “Barber’s Tales” (Kuwentong
Barbero).
“If you are in Tokyo or you have friends in Tokyo ( please spread the word) Please watch the world premiere of BARBER’S TALES at the 26th Tokyo International Film Festival. I will see you there. With Writer / Director Jun Lana MARAMING SALAMAT!” the actress posted on Facebook early Thursday.
Domingo flew in from Manila while Lana came straight from New York City where he wed his longtime partner, TV5 executive Perci Intalan, on Monday. Intalan is a co-producer of “Barber’s Tales”.
Domingo plays the lead role in the film, about a widow who inherits her late husband’s barber shop in a remote village during the onset of Martial Law in the early 1970s.
“Barbers Tales” is among 15 films in the festival’s main competition section, alongside the latest works of other acclaimed Asian directors. It will premiere on Friday at the Toho Cinemas Screen7 at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo.
Celebrated Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige will head the jury.
Lana’s script for “Barber’s Tales” was a Palanca Award winner in 1997 and bagged four top prizes last March at the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum, including Best Project.
It is the second in a planned trilogy of films set in a small town that Lana started with last year’s award-winning “Bwakaw”.
Another Filipino film, Mikhail Red’s “Rekorder”, will compete in the Tokyo festival’s Asian Future section.
Formerly known as the Young Cinema competition, the section showcases first and second-time feature filmmakers. “Rekorder” is Red’s feature film debut, which premiered at the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival in July.
