Mikael Daez and Kylie Padilla, First Filipino Ambassadors of Save the Children Charity.

Kapuso stars, Mikael Daez and Kylie Padilla were launched as ambassadors of Save the Children charity at a press conference held in Abe restaurant at SM Mall of Asia on November 4. Part of the event was also the opening and ribbon-cutting of a photo exhibit depicting Yolanda survivors.

Minerva Cabiles, Child Rights Governance Director, discussed the current status quo in Tacloban a year after typhoon Yolanda’s devastation. Children were among the most affected after the typhoon—their homes destroyed, their families separated from them, and their basic needs unmet.

Save the Children made the initiative to lend a helping hand by providing life-saving aid, recovery, and rehabilitation support. CFS or “Children Friendly Spaces” were also made available for children to play and recover from painful and traumatic experiences brought about by Yolanda. Since the tragedy, Save the Children has reached nearly 800,00 children and adults and has helped in restoring livelihood, shelter, sanitation, improving health and nutrition services, protecting children from harm and getting them back to school.

Kylie, along with Mikael, are the first Filipino representatives of Save the Children, who have international ambassadors such as Hollywood actresses, Jennifer Garner and Julianne Moore, football star Cristiano Ronaldo, and international celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe.

Kylie is honored of the opportunity and said, “Gusto ko lang na makakuwentuhan ko ‘yung mga bata kasi napaka-inspiring ng mga kuwento nila at saka gusto ko lang na mapasaya sila at may tumatak sa memory nila na may mabuting pumunta dito. ‘Yung happiness lang na may natulungan ako, may napasaya ako.

Ang ganda ng ginagawa nila, ‘di ba? Accomplishment sa akin makasama sa Save the Children.” Actor and Saksi ‘Midnight Express’ segment host, Mikael, shares the same sentiments regarding his latest engagement. “Hindi pa ako nakakapunta ng Tacloban. I wanna see it personally.

I’m looking forward to going with Kylie and sabi nga sa amin, wala talaga ‘yung mga basic needs na kailangan talaga ng mga children doon—food, health care, and siyempre education; wala na rin iyon. Ang dami nilang tulong na kailangan, so for me and Kylie, we want to lend a hand in any way we can.

I am privileged to be able to use my work for this excellent cause.” The two will also be visiting Tacloban in the coming weeks to extend their support and help out children who have been affected by typhoon Yolanda. The ribbon cutting ceremony of the Save the Children public photo exhibit dubbed “Yolanda: A Children’s story" was also graced by Kylie and Mikael. They were joined by Tarlac Rep.

Susan Yap and National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council Assistant Secretary Victor Batac. The photo exhibit will run from November 5 to 20 at the SM Mall of Asia ‘By the Bay.’
