Call it “Glee” meets “Bituing Walang Ningning”, TV5’s “Trenderas” has
the makings of a game changer for primetime teleserye viewing.
The upcoming musical comedy drama follows the story of three “tindera” friends who came close to realizing their common dream of making it big in the music industry when an uploaded video of their performance suddenly becomes a trending sensation.
Although the series is topbilled by uber busy superstar, Ms. Nora Aunor, the story’s main focus is really on the “Trenderas” played by former child star Isabelle de Leon and promising newcomers Lara Maigue and Katrina Velarde.
All three girls are musical artists in their own right. Isabelle, now 19, is best known for playing Duday, the youngest TV daughter of Vic Sotto in the GMA sitcom “Da De Di Do Du”. Last year, she reinvented herself as a guitar-toting singer-songwriter and scored the hits “1 Week to Move On” and “Feelingero” from her debut EP “Lovezone”.
Lara, 22, is a former member of the award-winning group the Opera Belles and is best known as the composer of Karylle’s PhilPop hit “Sa ‘Yo Na Lang Ako” which was also recorded by Regine Velasquez and herself for TV5’s recently concluded weekly drama series “For Love or Money”.
And Katrina, also 19, is the YouTube sensation also known as Suklay Diva who is also a member of “The X-Factor Philippines” finalist A.K.A. Jam and, prior to that, the “Talentadong Pinoy” Hall of Famers New Born Divas.
In separate interviews with InterAksyon, Isabelle, Lara and Katrina are all one in saying that they’re thrilled to be part of a series that allows them to showcase both their acting chops and singing abilities.
“I’m really excited that I get to sing on the show. Hopefully, I’ll get to sing my own songs here. We’re working on it,” Isabelle said.
“It’s really a big deal to be part of musical show with Nora Aunor in it. She’s someone that we always look up to as an inspiration,” declared Lara who like Isabelle also hopes to sing her own original songs on the show.
“Ang gusto ko lang talaga maging singer. Maka-trabaho lang si Tito Gary V, malaking bagay na para sa akin. Tapos ngayon kasama na ako sa ‘Trenderas’ na may mga big stars pa. Ang mga eksena ko pa kasama si Nora Aunor na mentor ko sa show. Parang nakaka-tense, nakaka-pressure pero kailangan kong ipakita na deserving ako,” added Katrina.
Although Isabelle is already known for her stint in “Da De Di Do Du”, the circumstances that led to the casting of Lara and Katrina in “Trenderas” were a little more unusual.
“Actually, TV5 discovered me through PhilPop. Nung nakita ako ni Ms. Wilma Galvante dun, sabi niya sa akin, ‘Artista ka’ and then she asked me, ‘Are you open to acting?’ and then I said, ‘As long as I can share my music, I’ll do whatever it takes.”
While identified with groups, Katrina said she has been singing since the age of 6 and had constantly participated in countless singing contests. She said she came into her own when she posted a video of herself practicing for an amateur singing contest.
“Nagpa-practice po ako pagkatapos kong maligo at magsuklay ng buhok. Nung nag-video po ako gamit yung iPad ko, yung nakuha kong microphone eh yung suklay.. So habang kumakanta po ako, gamit ko yung suklay tapos naging viral na yung video for two to three months hanggang tinawag na akong Suklay Diva. Doon na po ako nakilala,” she recalled.
For Isabelle, working with Lara and Katrina who she describes as both amazing artists has been a wonderful experience so far. “We always have a great time on and off the camera. I’m so happy to be working with them as well as with Ms. Nora Aunor, Sheyl Cruz, Tina Paner and the other cast members who have been very kind and supportive to us,” she enthused.
As to why viewers should watch out for “Trenderas”, Isabelle has this to say.
“We Filipinos are musically inclined and I think this is the perfect show for the whole family. ‘Trenderas’ is a musical, comedy drama that will trend in your hearts when you see it.”
Also starring Dingdong Avanzado, Carl Guevarra, Edward Mendez, Arnel Ignacio, Cacai Bautista, K Brosas, Kitkat, Francine Prieto and Leo Martinez, “Trenderas”will air on TV5 very soon.
