World Boxing Organization
(WBO) light flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will settle an
unfinished business as he goes head-to-head with Mexican, and former foe
Moises “Moi” Fuentes in “Pinoy Pride 25: The Rematch for Glory” this
Saturday (May 10), 6 PM at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
In their last bout, Nietes (32-1-4) retained his championship belt via a draw with the former WBO minimumweight champion, Fuentes (19-1-1) This Saturday, the Filipino will face Fuentes looking to shrug off doubters and solidify his status as the lightweight champion.
Nietes is no stranger to defining moments. His monicker “ahas” is attributed to his fearlessness as a janitor who took care of ALA Promotions founder and head Tony Aldueguer’ snake pit. He also believed in himself and his skills as a boxer, leading him to personally approach ALA and become one of the organization’s boxers.
More than a decade later, Nietes is hailed as one of the best Filipino boxers. Boxing‘s coaching great Freddie Roach puts him second to Manny Pacquiao among the country’s best boxers. He has earned two WBO championships (minimumweight and light flyweight) and can take a step closer to breaking the streak Filipino boxing legend Flash Elorde as the longest reigning Filipino champion if he remains unbeaten in two more fights by December this year.
WBO International flyweight champion Melindo (31-1) continues to bounce back from his first career loss against Mexican Martin “Diablo” Tecuapetla (11-5-2). It will be his second fight since losing a title match for the WBO Flyweight championship.
On the other hand, Bautista (34-3) was last seen losing his WBO International featherweight belt in 2013 which was immediately followed up by the news of his retirement. The former champ gets back into the ring this Saturday against another Mexican, Sergio “El Cuate” Villanueva (26-3-2) to announce his return to the sport.
