5 Filipina Fashion Models-Turned-Actresses.

Our two Pinay bets, Katarina Rodriguez and Jodilly Pendre, will be battling it out against the best of the best from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and other countries starting tonight, in Asia’s Next Top Model S2, at 9PM on TV5! Will they stand out, or will they fall down on the ultimate catwalk to fame?
As their futures are yet to be determined, let’s take a look back on the past fashion models who, after conquering the style stratosphere, had crossed over to the inviting, neighboring world of showbiz and made a name for themselves as actresses.

Angel Aquino
This svelte morena beauty first graced the pages of fashion magazines as a print model before appearing in 1996 as a Banaue princess in Mumbaki with Raymart Santiago. More than a decade since then, the ageless Angel has established a solid reputation as an actress and TV host.  Last year marks several acting milestones for this style icon, having appeared in the internationally acclaimed On the Job, starred in her first stage play Closer, and bagged the CineFilipino Best Supporting Actress award for Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita.

Melanie Marquez
Strictly speaking, Melanie was first a beauty queen before becoming an actress and model.  But, as the only Filipina who can boast of being 1979 Miss International, 1985 Face of the 80s, and 1986 Supemodels first runner-up, the incomparable Melanie deserves to be on this list. Her contributions to showbiz? She has starred in her own bio-pic and in a Hong Kong film with Cynthia Luster, produced some of the Superstar Nora Aunor’s movies, and of course, her golden Melanisms (go ahead, Google it.)

Tweetie de Leon
The first thing 80s and 90s kids will remember upon hearing this model’s rather unusual name: Faye of Okay Ka, Fairy Ko! This UP graduate was already a print and ramp model when she accepted the role of Enteng Kabisote’s (played by Vic Sotto)engkantada wife. (Interestingly, Faye was previously played by Kapatid star Alice Dixson, who left after the show’s first season.) After 6 years in the show, Tweetie quit and eventually returned to modelling, but without leaving first an indelible mark as the elegant, magical mom of our childhood.

Francine Prieto
Known as Anna Marie Falcon back then, this 5’10 Filipino-Chinese-Norwegian started modelling at age 13, when she finished as a finalist in Elite Model Search. She joined several beauty and modelling contests afterward, before transforming herself into the sexy star Francine Prieto. After gaining weight, however, Francine resorted to accepting character roles and reinvented herself as a DJ. But, on a special episode of Face the People last year, the actress was said to be contemplating leaving showbiz for good to pursue overseas opportunities.

Wilma Doesnt
In a tisay-dominated modelling industry, the dark-skinned Wilma was a refreshing change. The Pampanga native paved the way for more and more black beauties to penetrate the local fashion scene. Aside from being a model, she is also a TV host and a comedienne, with a Best Supporting Actress award for Sisterakas in the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival, and was a mentor-judge in Philippines' Next Top Model.

Will Jodilly or Katarina be the next Angel, Melanie, Tweetie, Francine, or Wilma? But before we get into all that, let’s hope first that one of them becomes Asia’s Next Top Model! Follow their journey starting tonight at 9 PM on TV5!
