TV5 Actress Claire Ruiz Gets Big Break with ‘Beki Boxer’

For those wondering if rising young stars Claire Hartell and Claire Ruiz are really one and the same, the answer is yes. And that’s coming from Claire herself.

“My real name is Claire Ruiz Hartell. But my management at TV5 wanted me to be known as Claire Ruiz para daw mas malapit sa masa,”, the towering16-year-old Filipino-Australian actress told InterAksyon during the recent media launch of “Beki Boxer” where she plays a love interest of sorts to the gay boxer played by Alwyn Uytingco.

“Ako po si Venus, anak po ako ni kuya Onyok Velasco. Kababata ko si Rocky played by Alwyn Uytingco at may gusto ako sa kanya. Pero kahit na nalaman kong beki pala siya, umaasa pa rin ako na in the future, maging tunay na lalaki pa rin si Rocky,” she said about her character.

Her involvement in the series also ignited her own passion for boxing as her workout activity of choice.
“During the story conference, Direk Jade Castro asked me if I could do boxing scenes. Lumapit ako kay kuya Onyok, sabi ko turuan mo naman akong mag-boxing. Sabi niya, ‘Tara, punta ka sa gym ko’. So I went to his gym and when I started to lose weight, that’s when I got hooked kasi masaya naman siya,” she revealed.

Claire considers “Beki Boxer” the biggest break of her career after she joined TV5’s reality talent search “Star Factor” in 2010 where her batchmates included Eula Caballero, Ritz Azul and Morissette Amon.
Among her other career highlights so far are guest appearances on “Star Confessions” and “Kapitan Awesome” for the Kapatid network and on ABS-CBN’s “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and “Be Careful with my Heart” where she had a recurring role as Joey Acosta.

“I think in terms of exposure and the challenging role, I think this is a good opportunity for me,” she conceded.

“Nakakatuwa yung isa sa mga early scenes ko dito. Ito yung part na nagkakilala si Rocky at si Atong played by Vin Abrenica. Nagpapakilala si Atong kay Rocky tapos bigla akong e-epal, ‘Hoy, Rocky, eto na pala yung meryenda mo’ so masisira yung moment nila sa akin kasi nga gustong-gusto ko si Rocky and I care for him a lot.”

Although it took her awhile to get to this level, Claire has nonetheless been patient and thankful to “Star Factor” batchmate Ritz Azul in particular for the sound advice she gave her a few years back.

“Naging close kami ni Ritz sa ‘Star Factor’ dahil pareho kaming taga-Pampanga. Pag may workshop kami pareho, sabay kami umuwi. ‘Okay lang yan, magkaka-break ka rin’ ang lagi niyang advice sa akin,” Claire recalled.

And now that it’s finally happening, does Ritz know about it?

“It’s been a year since we last saw each other so baka hindi pa niya alam na kasali ako sa ‘Beki Boxer’. Pero kung alam na niya, malamang pag nagkita kami nun, sasabihin niya, ‘Oh my God, Claire. Eto na yung pinag-uusapan natin dati’, nangyari na,” she exclaimed.

When asked if she has a dream role, Claire said there is no particular type of role that she has in mind at the moment but her dream is to become a leading lady, which is sort of happening in “Beki Boxer” except her love interest in the primetime teleserye is actually looking for a leading man.

“Ang sakit! Ang sakit! Ang tagal nyong nag-usap at nagkasama tapos kung kailan ka na-in love sa kanya saka mo malalaman na ganun pala, hindi pala kayo puwede” she replied when asked how she would react if she fell in love with a guy who turned out to be gay.

Aside from Alwyn, who else among today’s young actors does she want to be paired with in the future regardless of network affiliation?

“Matteo Guidicelli!,” Claire replied without hesitation. “Hindi ko ma-explain. When people ask me, bakit si Matteo? I’m like, ‘Ano ba? Bakit hindi niyo ma-gets eh ang guwapo guwapo niya.”
So has she had a chance to meet her dream leading man in person?

“Yes, I did once. Yung manager ko kasi, friend niya yung handler ni Matteo and I’m like, ipakilala mo naman ako kay Matteo. Parang siya pa yung nahiya nung nag-hello sa kin. My hands were sweating kasi super kilig talaga ako,” she recalled.

Asked what she thought about rumors linking Matteo to singer-actress Sarah Geronimo, Claire just smiled and said, “No comment.”

Also starring Joross Gamboa, Christian Vasquez, Candy Pangilinan, John Regala, Cholo Barretto, Danita Paner and Kristel Moreno, “Beki Boxer” premieres on TV5 on March 31, replacing “Let’s Ask Pilipinas”.
