Last year, Filipina model Stephanie Retuya nearly won the first cycle of Asia’s Next Top Model—a franchise of the reality show hosted and produced by supermodel Tyra Banks in America.
The shy mom from San Pedro, Laguna, who was the sole representative of the country to the competition, took the runner-up spot next to 27-year-old Thai model Jessica Amornkuldilok, who won the grand prize.
This year, two Pinays are bound to show the world two ends of the Filipina beauty spectrum—20-year-old Jodilly Pendre, the morena, and 21-year-old Katarina Rodriguez, the mestiza.
JODILLY PENDRE, THE MORENA. An information systems graduate from the University of Sto. Tomas, Jodilly Pendre is one of the lucky girls vying for this year's title.
She was already starting a career in modeling when she joined an in-campus beauty pageant, the 2011 search for Ideal Thomasian Personalities.
She did not win the title, but, after the pageant, managed to land bigger modeling gigs, including a part in the Philippine Fashion Week.
The morena beauty has also been featured in the pages of top fashion magazines, including a fashion editorial for Preview Magazine's August 2013 issue.
Jodilly was also featured in the campaign for designer Rajo Laurel's Holiday 2012 Hanami shoe collection for major brand Parisian.
KATARINA RODRIGUEZ, THE MESTIZA. Katarina Rodriguez is the other Filipina chosen to compete in the biggest Asian franchise of the reality show.
This Filipino-American beauty decided to pursue a professional modeling career after being confirmed as one of the finalists of the competition.
"I started modeling professionally solely because of Asia's Next Top Model.
"Before I joined the competition, I did a few favors for classmates or friends, but nothing was professional.
"I prioritized school and track above all else, which kept me very busy."
Katarina is a member of the De La Salle University Women's Track and Field team.
Despite her lack of professional experience, she does have some stuff to beef up her resumé, including an online advertisement for a popular beauty product, and GMA Network’s Christmas Station ID for 2012.
Lastly, she's the godchild of Filipino designer and model Tweetie De Leon-Gonzalez, who serves as one of her inspirations in joining the competition.
