‘Ilo Ilo’ cracks top 10 of indie site’s Oscar prediction list; in PH cinemas this December.

This early, several movie news sites and film blogs are coming up with their own 2014 Oscar predictions and at least one site has ranked Singapore’s “Ilo Ilo” in its Top 10 for the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Indiewire, dubbed by Forbes magazine as the “online heartbeat of the world’s independent film community”, has released its latest Oscar predictions where Anthony Chen’s poignant drama about the relationship between a Singaporean family and their Filipina maid have made its shortlist consisting of 15 films out of the 76 submissions.

The site’s top three predictions consist of films that also figure prominently in other Oscar predictions list: Iran’s “The Past”, Saudi Arabia’s “Wadjda” and Denmark’s “The Hunt”. Two other films in the Top 10, Australia’s “The Rocket” and Chile’s “Gloria” can also be found in other shortlists.

At No. 10, “Ilo Ilo” is ranked ahead of Hong Kong’s “The Grandmaster” directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, which holds the No. 15 spot. Chen’s feature film debut is also the first film from Singapore to win the Camera d’Or award at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival that took place last May.

It is also one of three official Oscar entries to feature Filipino actors and vividly show a glimpse of Filipino life at home or in foreign lands. The other two are Hannah Espia’s “Transit”, the Philippines’ official entry that recently earned a Special Mention citation at the Busan International Film Festival in Korea; and Sean Ellis’ “Metro Manila”, the UK’s submission that is also currently showing in local theaters.

“Ilo Ilo” itself (retitled as “Iloilo”) will be screened in the country this December 4 after it was picked up for local distribution by Origin8 Media, the makers of “Zombadings” and distributor of “Kimmy Dora: Kambal sa Kiyeme”, “Boses” and the acclaimed documentary “Give Up Tomorrow”.

Origin8 was personally chosen by writer/director Anthony Chen and international distributor Memento Films over bigger and more established local film distributors because of its expertise in handling non-mainstream pictures.
Since its debut at Cannes, “Ilo Ilo” has been screened in New Zealand, Switzerland, Italy, Russia and Canada. The film has proven to be one of the most well- received Asian films worldwide today. The commercial release of “Ilo Ilo” in Singapore commenced in late August where it immediately became a blockbuster. Last September, it opened in 75 cineplexes all over France.

In a recent interview with InterAksyon, actress Angeli Bayani who plays the maid of the Singaporean family in the film, confessed that she was pleasantly shocked when she learned that the film had been chosen as Singapore’s official entry to the Oscars.
“Honestly, nakakagimbal siya. Kasi you have to ground yourself and think that maybe, this is just a pitch for the Oscars. I’m very, very proud of this film and I can’t begin to describe how humbled I am to be part of this project,” she exclaimed.

Angeli also revealed that during the Singaporean premiere of the film, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was in attendance and sat with their group at the front row.

“Marami akong naranasan sa premiere ng ‘Ilo Ilo’ sa Singapore na hindi ko naranasan kahit kailan sa Pilipinas. At the premiere, I was provided with clothing and jewelry made of real gold. The premiere was a huge affair. Si Anthony Chen, hindi ine-expect the warm reception and reaction from the audience at the premiere. Iyak siya nang iyak.”

Aside from the Camera d’Or, “Ilo Ilo” went on to receive other awards, including Best Feature Film and the NETPAC award at the 11th Pacific Meridian Vladivostok International Film Festival in Russia as well as the International Ecumenical Award at the recently concluded Jameson Cinefest Miskolc International Film Festival in Hungary.
