Hollywood Remake of ‘On The Job’ Gets a Studio as Universal Options Film Rights.

Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to Erik Matti’s acclaimed crime drama “On The Job”, according to Variety magazine.

In its report posted October 17 on its website, the Hollywood trade bible also revealed that as earlier reported, the remake will be written, directed and produced by Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur and will also be produced by Scott Stuber.

Kormakur is known for action films adapted from previously written or filmed material. Two of his biggest hits are 2012’s “Contraband”, a remake of the Icelandic film “Reykjavík-Rotterdam”, which he himself had starred in, and the recently shown “2 Guns”, based on the graphic novel series of the same name.

Stuber is a Hollywood veteran who has been producing high-profile projects of varying genres since 1997. Among his recent films are “Safe House”, “Battleship”, “Identity Thief”, “Ted” and “The Internship”.

The Variety report also noted that “while some inspiration for the concept came from Erik Matti’s Filipino movie ‘On The Job,’ Kormakur actually had already begun developing a project based on the same events as ‘On The Job’ with XYZ Films before the Filipino film began production.”

XYZ Films handles the worldwide sales of “OTJ” which was picked up for North American distribution by Well Go USA after it premiered to rave reviews at the Cannes International Film Festival last May.

“On The Job” follows the story of two prison inmates who work as contract killers who get day passes to carry out assassinations for clients that include politicians and military officials.

Although no actors have yet been cast in the American remake, the involvement of both Kormakur and Stuber indicate who might be in the running.

As name-dropped by “OTJ” actor Gerald Anderson, a possible frontrunner for one of the lead roles, possibly that of the younger assassin he played in the film, is Mark Wahlberg, who starred in Kormakur’s “Contraband” and “2 Guns” and also headlined “Ted”, which was produced by Stuber.

Anderson also named Tom Cruise as a possible contender for another lead role, possibly that of Tatang, but Denzel Washington, who also starred in “2 Guns” as well as the Stuber-produced “Safe House” which the Variety article compared to “OTJ”, is another possibility.

Canadian critic Chris Bumblay, in his review of “OTJ” in joblo.com, suggested one actor who would make a terrific Tatang — Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad” fame.
