Bing Loyzaga shows her softer side as a caring mother on ‘Positive’

Considered one of the best kontrabidas in the business, Bing Loyzaga is one actress that viewers love to hate. At 42, she’s played so many villainesses in films and on television that she could probably take on such parts with her eyes closed.

Her role on TV5′s provocative new drama series “Positive” is therefore a welcome change for the actress. As Mommy Ester, the caring mother of the lead character portrayed by Martin Escudero, Bing gets to show her softer, vulnerable side. And the shift has her on edge.

“Honestly, ninenerbiyos ako na makita ng mga tao yung soft side ko. But it will show basically the heart of the story. In this role, all guards down ako, all out. I don’t have the mask. Dito para akong nakahubad, wala akong bitbit. I’m putting myself in the mother role, based on real life. The only difference is I have daughters in real life, and here I have a son who is sick. It’s more of the relationship of mother and son,” she says.

And that son happens to be HIV-positive, hence the title. For Bing, this predicament gives the show a social dimension that puts it a cut above the usual soap operas on TV.

“For me, ‘Positive’ is an eye-opener. It doesn’t just hit on people who are living with HIV. It concerns anybody who is living with any kind of sickness because basically there’s a stigma in our society that when you’re sick you are not welcome.

“You know society sometimes judges you, so hopefully my character will help to wake up some people. Kahit sabihin natin na sampu lang na tao ang magising ng character ko, masaya na ako at least may nasapul ako,” Bing muses.

At any rate, she has only admiration for the talent of her castmates, especially Martin. “It’s an honor for me to work with Martin. He’s such a very good actor, genuine person, for me working with him is already an award,” she says.

They first worked together on the soap “Babaeng Hampaslupa”.
“This time he’ll see other version of me. I’m not playing the villain but his mom. So minsan nahihiya ako sa kanya kasi different side of me and sometimes I catch him wondering if it’s really me that’s there. Kaya huh, si Bing ba ito?” she quips.

She appreciates the on-set antics of Rufa Mae Quinto, who plays one of Martin’s ex-girlfriends. “Luka-luka lang tulad ko,” Bing shares.

She only has words of encouragement for relative newcomer Helga Krapf, who gets her meatiest role to date as Martin’s wife.

“Helga, who is my daughter-in-law here, is like my daughters. Ako naman, super supportive ako sa mga baguhan. Ilang mga bagets na ang nakasama ko and they really impress me. Dumaan din ako sa edad nila, pero hindi ako nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng natatanggap nila,” she notes.

At 42, Bing has maintained her good looks and physique. She follows a “proper diet” to stay fit and exercises regularly and does yoga.

But her best age-defying weapon is this simple mantra: “You have to love and take care of yourself.”
Notwithstanding the haughty mestiza features that have been her stock in trade, Bing swears she’s a cool mom in real life. Bonding with her grown-up daughters Alyssa and Gabby keeps wrinkles at bay.

“I spend a lot of time with them. We go to the mall, simple bonding where they can talk about anything. Baligtad na kasi they’re very open with me, especially Alyssa. I even tell her my problems instead of the other way around,” she shares.

As for her marriage to singer-actor Janno Gibbs, Bing admits that it has had its share of ups and downs. But she believes they have survived the worst and managed to keep things together.

“We have an arrangement, when it comes to family, we are there pareho. If there are major decisions that need to be discussed with the family, nag-uusap kaming dalawa,” she says.
As her career continues to flourish, is there anything else she wants to achieve?
“I wish to do my own telesine before my contract expires on 2014, a project that will make an impact,” she declares. She has made such a request known to TV5 chief executive content officer Wilma V. Galvante.
“I’m not saying  na walang impact yung mga nagawa ko na before. But I’ve done so many killings and slapping and rolling over and everything, diving in the pool, throw it and buried it, name it,” she says with a laugh.
How about a lead role for a change? “Mga bida roles, why not? I’ll cross the bridge when I’m there.”
In the meantime, she is not taking her role on “Positive” lightly. Not at all.
“Right now I’m really trying to make the most of this show and trying to get involved with the AIDS Society of the Philippines. I think they need to be heard and they’re just fortunate that this show is giving them the voice,” she says.
Bing gives credit to TV5 for taking on such a provocative subject — the AIDS epidemic that people thought had been put under control but has, in recent years, become a major public concern once again.

“We’re so fortunate that there’s a station that is willing to gamble on that coz it’s about time. We cannot enter this battle, this race of having this show, empty-handed ‘coz di kami pwedeng magpanggap na armado kami dahil di ito pwedeng mag-inarte lang kami. We have to be very factual.”

Bing is grateful that the cast of “Positive” has been given the opportunity to interact with people living with HIV.

“We were very blessed to have gotten to know some of them. We interviewed them, mingles with them. They thought us a lot things which not only informative for us but also for our characters in the show that we’re doing because we would like to inform everybody about the situation not just of the sickness but the epidemic that is happening in the Philippines,” she concludes.

“Positive” premieres on TV5 on October 17 at 9PM.
